The coldest

My house is too cold. Our heater is incredibly inefficient so rather than waste money/energy on turning it on we just suffer. SUFFER.

In order to sleep like a normal person in my insanely frigid room last night, I:

  • bundled up in a long-sleeved shirt, my Buell orchards sweatshirt, polartec leggings, hiking socks, and my ankle brace (not specifically for warmth but I think it helped)
  • borrowed my roommate’s space heater for an hour to heat up the air in my room (but then had to give it back, so the effects were limited)
  • snuggled under my down comforter and the heavy fleece blanket quilt I made last year
  • went to sleep at 11:30 thinking all would be fine and dandy and I could wake up to the 6:15am alarm I set like a normal person

AND STILL

  • woke up at 12:30 too cold (I think this is the point where I added the smartwool hat)
  • woke up at 1:30 with a foot cramp (WTF socks AND ankle brace? You are supposed to protect me!)
  • had a terrible dream about my little brother dying (AUGH this is the first time I have had a dream like this and it was HORRIBLE)
  • was jolted out of sleep by my alarm at 6:15, then hit snooze every 9 minutes until I finally dragged myself out of bed and into the shower at 7:25

Conclusion: I am CAMPING. In my HOUSE. My INDOOR HOUSE, in CALIFORNIA. I do not live in a car, or a tent, or the little concrete alcove that used to be an entryway next door to the auto mechanic’s across the street (where homeless people sleep).

I’m going to donate to a homeless shelter now, thanks.

And tonight I’m sleeping in my sleeping bag.

Pear Cranberry Crisp - adapted from here
I did mostly the same thing, but used 1 cup of cranberries and just 2 pounds of pears. I also used agave in addition to a splash of maple syrup, cinnamon and cayenne in addition to ginger, and agave instead of sugar in the topping. I added way more oats than they recommend to the topping and used walnuts instead of pecans. Yum yum yum!

Blast, I guess I couldn’t avoid winter forever.
